Venturing out to get a late-night bite or grabbing one on an alcohol and/or other controlled substance infused way back home from downtown is nowhere as much fun as in my 'hood, just off-Ustanichka Street.
The first establishment just when you get off the Bus 31 at the 1st stop after THe Hotel Serbia is Jamburger or YUM-burger!!! A steady stream of hungry and hungover customers at any time of day or night speaks for itself.
In addition to a spectacular range of meat dishes (Serbian-style grill in all kinds, shapes and forms) it offers a wide variety of pizzas and sweet and savory pancakes.
"To be or not to be, whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer, the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune or to take arms against the sea of troubles and by opposing end them..."
Here, the Shakespearean dilemma inevitably means having to decide between the YUM burger or a hot burek at NEŠIĆ's BAKERY, just next door to it.
Or a slightly lighter version thereof...
Ustanička Street even has its own branch office of Belgrade's famous Pećina popcorn!
At the next stop, just before the Bus 31's turnaround, this green market stays open around the clock.
And next to it, another grill place fittingly named "GOZBA" (The Feast).
Nope, I did not stop for a bite! I stood my ground and kept walking (and salivating) up the street determined to fully convey what else is on offer in my favorite grub street in Belgrade!
Chicken place PILENCE across the street was already closed, though it was just 11 p.m.
Well, I guess chickens do go to bed early.
But not the Chinese, thank God! This teeny-tiny Chinese fast food joint sells undoubtedly the BEST SICHUAN IN TOWN !!!

If you are visiting Belgrade, make a visit to the House of CHAOS your top priority!!! If you are visiting yours truly here in Belgrade, I will make it your top priority. Even my Chinese friend swears by it!
That's how good it is.
That's how good it is.
Last but not least...
... if you have managed to reach the top of the street without relenting and giving in to any of the street food items I mentioned, you will be properly rewarded in MILAN's BUTCHERHOUSE. Order some simple pork or lamb roast, a whole grilled chicken or just ask what's good and let
MILAN take care of you.
Cops always seem to know the best places to eat and that's also true here.
Neither the Belgrade's Finest nor Milan minded the fact that I was going to blog about them. On the contrary, they were very accomodating when I asked them to just act normal and keep ordering their food.
Here you can buy butchered meat, select some to be grilled to your liking or by some fresh roast to take home with you (salads are gratis) and, as of recently, Milan expanded the establishment by adding a glass-paneled room with half a dozen wooden tables with tableside service, if you can't wait to get home to satisfy your carnivorous craving.
The slogans on the front door are hilarious (one roughly translates as "There is No Heaven Like Home and No Pleasure Like Milan's Bacon Treasure") but nobody cares around here, as people are just too busy eating.
A police van in front of Milan's Butchery! I just hoped there was nobody inside in the back waiting for the Blue Boys to finish their dinner.
And yet another grilled-meat place. You can always tell the grub is good if both working class and people with some serious bling come to eat there.
If you still have room for dessert, just walk (or roll) back down Ustanička to NEŠIĆ for some sweets...
In case of overindulgence or indigestion, an E.R.and a pharmacy are just around the corner.
God forbid you should need them, but if you do, just hope they are at work and not out for a quick bite :)
Salivating heavily at this moment. Great post!
